In Spare, the memoir by Prince Harry, we learn about the heaviest and most traumatic aspects of his life. He lost his mother, Princess Diana, to an awful car crash, his struggles with finding his place in the world, his conflict with the British press, his heroic service in war, his decision to step away from being a working member of the Royal Family are all detailed in the book.
However, there are also some moments of levity. In January 2016, Harry traveled America, specifically Los Angeles, to visit a friend. The friend hosted a welcome party and when asked what he would like to drink, Harry, being a “typical Brit,” asked for a gin and tonic. His request was playfully denied.
Hell no, the Americans said, laughing. You’re in the States now, pal, have a real drink. Have a tequila.
I was familiar with tequila. but mostly club tequila. Late night tequila. What I was being offered now was proper tequila, fancy schmancy tequila, and I was being schooled in all the many ways of drinking it. Glasses were floating towards me containing tequila in every form. Neat. Rocks. Margarita. Splash of soda and lime.
I drank it all, every drop, and started feeling very bloody good.
I thought: I like these Americans. I like them a lot.
Although this was before Harry met Meghan, he was getting a taste of America and quite enjoying himself.
Therefore, the perfect drink pairing for Spare is “fancy schmancy” Clase Azul Tequila Reposado. Clase Azul Tequila Reposado is masterfully aged for eight months in American whiskey casks imparting its unique hazelnut and vanilla flavors as well as its exceptionally smooth finish.
Its decanter is our most recognized icon with its distinctive “feathered” design, painted by hand in cobalt blue.
TASTING NOTES
COLOR: Gold color with bright yellow highlights.
BODY: Medium.
AROMA: Agave syrup, vanilla, candied orange peel, and American oak. Light notes of cinnamon and banana.
FLAVOR: Hazelnut, vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, and a subtle hint of agave syrup.
Clase Azul Tequila Reposado is by far the best tequila I’ve ever tasted. I recommend sipping it neat in a copita-style tequila glass. It is absolutely delicious and tastes like honey and vanilla.
